My Korean Dinner

This was my dinner last Sunday. It was pretty good, but in itself it wasn’t too remarkable. Take a look at the menu on the wall - it was all in Korean. The TV on the wall was playing a Korean drama, with the dialogue in Korean. The scene would be totally unremarkable in Korea. But this restaurant was on a street near Wudaokou (五道口), in north-west Beijing. And there are many restaurants like this in the neighbourhood.

Apparently there are 700,000 Koreans living in China, with 100,000 in Beijing. Many of them live around the Beijing Language and Culture University (which is on 成府, just around the corner from the restaurant) and other language schools where they study Chinese. So that’s why.
