On Monday morning, we went to the Lakeside School run by Village Earth. It is actually a 2-room community center in the middle of a shantytown right on the edge of the Boeng Kak lake. We met these wonderful kids there. They know very little English and we know no Khmer - their language, so we communicate mostly by body language. But we had fun teaching a bit of English.
The center used to look out over the lake, across a tiny railway with few, if any, trains running on it. Now a large part of the lake had been filled in with sand.
The shantytown will be razed and the people removed. To make way for the rich to build their villas.
The villas are crowding the shantytown already. Note the contrast between the rickety house in front, and the pick villa behind it.
