Khajuraho carvings

Most people probably do not come to Khajuraho to see the professor.  Khajuraho is most famous for sexually explicit carvings, such as those on the Kandariya Mahadeva Temple.  The temples are dedicated to famous Hindu gods and goddesses such as Shiva, Vishnu, Ganesha, Lakshmi, …

The temple faces the east, and is covered by carvings on all sides.

Many people would recognise these carvings on the south side of Kandariya Mahadeva Temple.  Actually only about 10% of the carvings are sexual.  There are a lot of war scenes, animals - particularly elephants and monkeys, farming, women putting on make-up, women pulling splinters from their feet, and many other aspects of human life.  There is quite a bit of sex probably because it is an important part of human life.

There are many lions, such as this one with a child.

I wish we had more time to study the temples and the carvings.
